James Gwilym Tooth was a boy of 14 years when he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as a trumpeter, following his father's footsteps into Army life.

He was born in Woolwich, Kent in 1891.

In 1901 the family are living at Shoeburyness barracks in Essex. His father James is 38 years old & a Staff Sergeant in the R.G.A, his mother Emily is 34 & at home looking after 10 year old James, Irene 8, Gwendoline 7 & 2 year old Dorothy.

Pte Horace Weedon, 14903, No. 1 Company of the 2nd Grenadier Guards, was killed in action in France on September 14th, 1914.

Pte Weedon, whose parents John and Sarah Ann lived at 53 Wimbourne Road, Luton, was a native of the town and lived here the major portion of his short life. He was only 22 years old. As a schoolboy he went to Chapel Street School until he was about 12 and then to Waller Street. For a time he was employed by Mr Treasure, of the furniture stores in Cheapside, and then went to the Diamond Foundry He left there and joined the Army for three years.

Pte Snoxell enlisted at Luton and served in the Royal Horse Artillery before joining 68th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action at an unspecified location in France on August 26th, 1914

Percy was the eldest son of Albert (b 1868) and Annie (b 1870) who were in lodgings in Inkerman Street at the time of the 1891 Census, a year after his birth. Albert is described as a straw hat bleacher originally from Totternhoe and Annie as a straw hat finisher born in Luton.

Horace Tysom was born in July 1895 in Luton.

In 1911 he is living at 6 Hibbert Street with his family. His father William George is 44 & is a self employed straw hat manufacturer working at home, with wife Mary 46, assisting him. Kate Elizabeth is 21 & a straw hat machinist, William 19 is a labourer in a foundry, Olive May 10 & 7 year old George Percy, are at school. Horace is 15 years old & is a boot repairer.

William Smith was the Town Clerk of Luton during World War 1. He was appointed on September 3rd, 1912, and held the office until his death on January 7th, 1932 - just three days after his 63rd birthday.

Born in Liverpool, his municipal career began in Cardiff in 1890. In 1893 he was appointed assistant Town Clerk of Colchester and then for five years from May 1907 was Town Clerk of the Essex town. He was chosen as Town Clerk of Luton from among 70 candidates.

Jesse Bertran Hammett was born in 1895 in Luton to Walter & Emily.

In 1911 he is 16 years old & living at 169 Park street with his parents, bother Cyril 13, his brother-in-law Frederick Harding & they have a lodger Robert Chivers.

Jesse is working as an order boy in the hat trade. His brother-in-law is a clerk & his mother is a machinist, also in the hat trade. His father & lodger are general labourers in the building trade.

On 20th January 1915 Jesse joined the Royal Engineers as a driver, then was sent to France.
